BeltLine After Dark is a two-day performance arts and music festival on the Westside Trail.  The program will include pop up performances, acrobatic arts, artisan vendors, a musical line up of Afrobeat, Motown, Soul and Hip Hop artists that will jam into the evening. Experience an extraordinary fusion of cirque acts, art, dance, and vibrant energy at an afternoon Immersive Daylight Dance Experience, all brought together under the guidance of world-renowned choreographer David Norwood, collaborating once again with Liquid Sky’s Artistic Director, Marilyn Chen.

The Hysteria Series is an evolving program of devised performances exploring the world of being an “incurable woman” with butoh, burlesque, and mask work (specially neutral mask and commedia dell’arte traditions).

7PM:  Images of Sound by Jeremy Muller

Jeremy Muller and guests will perform musical works that utilize innovative visual elements.

8PM: Novoa Dances 

“In This House” is loosely inspired by Ibsen’s play, “A Doll’s House” and explores themes of family structures, gender roles and materialism through a queer lens. This piece features choreography by Meaghan Novoa in collaboration with the dancers and also features original music composition by Dan Carey Bailey and video art projection by Sean Dahlman.

Start the day with games on the lawn or creating your own Mardis Gras/Junkanoo-style headpiece to wear in the parade, make a caxixi, or get your face painted while DJs spin classic and contemporary hits. Pack some snacks, bring blankets, and enjoy a fun-filled day on the Westside Park meadow.  Supplies are limited. No cost to participate.

4 – 5:30PM: No Tables, No Chairs Funk-line Parade

Join Mausiki Scales and the Common Ground Collective, Atlanta Junkanoo Band and a host of of other performers and guests in a parade through the park.

5:45-6:45PM: “Assane” Kouyate 

Discover Manding music through 13th century traditional instruments from their origin to the Mali Empire, founded by Sundiata Keita, its first ruler. Three key griot instruments will be featured – the bala, precursor to the xylophone, the ngoni, a traditional guitar and precursor to the banjo, and the 21-string kora, built from a calabash or gourd and precursor to the harp. EGMT will provide a brief historical context of Malian djeliya ancestral traditions, that recount the griot narrative through song, dance and instrumentation passed down through generations.

Mausiki Scales has been a force in the Atlanta indie music scene for almost two decades as a sought-after keyboardist and founder/musical director of the critically acclaimed ensemble, The Common Ground Collective. The Common Ground Collective is a fifteen-piece band that explores musical styles from West Africa, including afrobeat and funk. Common Ground explores the musical thread that links the music of the African Diaspora.   Mausiki Scales and Common Ground are known for their musical collaborations with Roy Ayers, Les, Nubians, Julie Dexter, Avery Sunshine, Valencia Robinson and Sandra Isadore.

Assane Kouyate is a multi-talented Senegalese artist, culture bearer,and djeli. In West African culture, griots (djelis or jelis) are oral historians, musicians and guardians of revered cultural traditions. A person cannot just become griot, they are born into a family tradition that is passed down through generations.


 

Jeremy Muller is active as a percussionist, composer, and multimedia artist. He’s been described as “highly creative” by Take Effect and has performed as a featured soloist at many venues throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia. Jeremy’s music often incorporates interactive technology and generative graphic scores. The way of spinning out musical ideas is something that is woven into the DNA of Jeremy’s music.


Burning Bones Physical Theater seeks to contribute to an original and fearless live performance and quality training culture in Atlanta by equipping actors with concrete skills they can take forward in their careers to meet the demands of the industry and building community engagement with compelling physical performances. Burning Bones accomplishes this by creating productions that include personalized skill development for its cast in the rehearsal process, offering workshops to the community, and prioritizing local artists and organizations in its partnerships. We are committed to the development of performance in the southeast, the continued progress of Atlanta as a site for unique and exciting artistic works, and the representation our work outside of the southeast as proudly Atlanta-based.
