Artist Statement

This project is a celebration of a special Finnish decor: himmelis. Instead of using straw, which is what himmelis are traditionally made with, these sculptures are made from transparent acrylic/plastic tubing of various colors. “Himmel” means “heaven” or “sky” in German, which seemed appropriate for the Atlanta BeltLine. The tubes allow light to shine through, casting patterns on the trail.

Artist Bio

The Indie Craft Experience (ICE) was founded in January 2005 to give indie crafters an opportunity to sell and promote their creations in Atlanta. ICE was founded in order to provide Atlanta with a major indie craft event and was created by two local crafters – Christy Petterson and Shannon Mulkey. In addition to craft markets, ICE also organizes a vintage market called Salvage and an annual Pop-Up Shop during the holiday season.
